The Freeport of Riga Authority announces innovation competition for students

The Freeport of Riga Authority announces innovation competition for students “The Port for the City”, the main objective of the said competition is to promote solutions, that are appropriate for the modern technology age,  in the  Freeport of Riga (FPR) economic activities, including attraction of new cooperation partners from Asian countries.

Any student of  the institutions of higher education of the Republic of Latvia, as well as any Latvian national, who is currently studying at the higher education institutions outside Latvian borders, are invited to participate in the challenging  competition “The Port for the City”. Young people are encouraged to strive for and find new ideas for increasing the competitiveness of the port, focusing on five thematic topics: technology, competitiveness, logistics, environment and marketing. Innovation might be unique, that is, without existing analogous or similar products in the market, or the proposed idea may have already been used elsewhere in the world's ports and a successful solution has been provided.

In the framework of this creative competition the team of two people should develop and provide an innovation related to the mentioned thematic topics (full topic list is provided at During the second selection round of the competition or the finals the students will have to present their ideas in person, creating a concise and attractive video presentation of their innovation.
Last year, the winners were the Riga Technical University (RTU) students, who managed to develop  a product , which can be used in the framework of the port operation - an electronic pilot voucher system prototype.

“The port operation is important for economic growth, especially when up-to-date solutions are available for implementation. We would like to involve young people so that they can provide their ideas on the port operation modernization and offer their solutions. The previous competition results demonstrated that there are creative and talented young people, who are able to offer not only innovative ideas, but even functioning solutions in the form of operating prototypes. We believe that this competition can contribute not only to the subsequent operation of the port, but also to the professional development of young people,” says the Freeport Deputy CEO Martins Ziemanis.

The objective of the competition “The Port for the City” is to create innovative and creative solutions that can be integrated into the port operation, as well as to stimulate young people's interest and understanding of modern port operation and its contribution to the city development with a special focus on provided opportunities for individual career development.

The student competition teams can apply for the participation in the said competition by April 28, 2017, at  the competition website , the competition works must be submitted by May 12, 2017,  while the competition finals will take place on  May 18, 2017. The award-winning work authors will receive the latest Samsung smartphones, Kindle e-readers, as well as surprise gifts from the Freeport of Riga.
